The internet was once a place. Somewhere along the way it turned into a feed. PixoChat comes from the branch where it didn't.

There was a handheld with a chat app built into it, and it only worked if your friend was in the same room. Two kids on a bus. Four at the back of a class, drawing badly at each other instead of talking. It never went online. That is the promise nobody kept.

In the other timeline, that promise was kept. Phones got better and networks got faster, and the chat kept the shape it started with: a small canvas, a handful of friends, and a sound when one of them shows up. You draw something, send it to the few people who will get it, and put your phone down. PixoChat is what that looks like, arriving in our timeline.

Where the branch split

Both timelines start in the same spot: a chat that lived on a handheld and reached the people sitting next to you. Then the internet made a choice about what it was for. Ours picked the feed, then the numbers that measure the feed, then the followers those numbers need, then the ads that pay for all of it. Each step made sense at the time. Together they turned a place into a stream.

The other branch kept the parts that were about people. Close friends instead of an audience. Presence, so you know who is around. A canvas instead of a text box. A room you go to and leave, instead of a stream that follows you out.

PixoChat is what you get if you follow that branch far enough. It is not a return to the handheld. It is the phone app that branch would have produced.
